Frequently Asked Questions on Rolfing® Structural Integration

The Ten Series and do I really need to do 10?

Rolfing® SI is performed in 10 sessions following a protocol to align and balance your body.  Each session is progressive and builds upon the one before and leads into the one ahead.  However, let's discuss this, should doing 10 sessions be an issue for you.

Is Rolfing SI just for adults, or would children and young adults benefit?

Rolfing SI is for everyone young and old.  You only need a desire to want to feel better in your body.

What does a Rolfing SI session entail?

We begin each session with a brief structural assessment and then we have a session of structural manipulation.

What should I wear to a Rolfing SI session?

You will arrive for a brief check in with the practitioner and this is done in your normal street or office attire. You will then get changed in privacy into your Rolfing SI attire, which for men is usually their briefs or running sport shorts.  For women, this is usually their underwear or sports bra and sport shorts. The practitioner assesses you in your Rolfing SI attire.

How can I tell if Rolfing SI is for me?

Let's discuss how I can help you.  If you're still unsure, try one session.  This will give you a pretty good idea of what the work is about and what it feels like.  Generally, most people know whether Rolfing SI will benefit them by the third session. This session provides a good stopping point for people who decide that Rolfing SI is not for them.

What is the difference between Rolfing and Massage?

The goals of Rolfing SI and Massage is different.  Massage is usually about relaxation. Rolfing aims for a longer term and overall improvement in your body's alignment and function.  Rolfing brings about relaxation through efficient posture and movement in your everyday life doing your everyday routines.

Why the name Rolfing?

Rolfing is named after American biochemist, Dr Ida P Rolf who developed the method in the 1950s. She concluded that lasting improvement in wellbeing was through organising a person's body structure in relation to gravity. Her insight was that gravity is an organising element. We have an optimal, natural body alignment and when this alignment is lost, it causes stress that can manifest in the body's connective tissues, fascia, causing physical discomfort.
